Producer Mark Ronson recently expressed his surprise upon learning that Billie Eilish had “no intention” of writing the Oscar-nominated song “What Was I Made For?” for the film “Barbie.” Despite Billie’s previous interviews detailing her struggle with depression and writer’s block during the song’s creation, Ronson revealed that when they initially met, none of these challenges were mentioned.

In an interview with ABC Audio, Ronson shared insights into their collaboration, stating, “We’d had these Zooms with Greta [Gerwig] and Billie, and FINNEAS and Greta had met before, and they were all mutual fans, and I was just meeting with them for the first time.”
During their initial discussions, Billie and FINNEAS seemed enthusiastic about writing a song for the movie, giving no indication of the creative hurdles they were facing. Ronson chuckled, saying, “And y’know, I’ve seen the interviews now where they’re like, ‘Yeah, we had writer’s block. We had no intention. We just wanted to see the new Greta Gerwig film.'”
Despite the unexpected challenges, the resulting song, “What Was I Made For?,” went on to receive an Oscar nomination. Billie Eilish, along with her brother FINNEAS, shared the Golden Globe for Best Original Song, and during the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Billie expressed the unexpected impact the film had on her, saying, “I felt so seen. And I did not expect that.”
Ronson acknowledged the emotional depth infused into the song, stating, “They must have been so inspired, like everybody who saw pieces of this film and then wrote a song. Because the movie is just imbued with so much emotion.”
The surprise revelation adds an intriguing layer to the journey of creating the Oscar-nominated song for “Barbie.” As the Oscars approach, airing on March 10 on ABC, the behind-the-scenes story of “What Was I Made For?” adds to the anticipation surrounding the celebrated event.
